We are pleased to announce that Julia Henderson has been awarded an Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Doctoral Scholarship for the 2011/12 academic year.
Julia, a Clinical Instructor, has worked within OSOT in numerous teaching and research positions for the past 7 years. She is an occupational therapist by training, “As a clinician my work has involved working with people with mental health issues, with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias, and with people requiring home-based palliative and orthopaedic care” and is also a professional actor, with 10 years of experience in stage, film and television. In September 2010, Julia began her doctoral studies in the department of Theatre Studies with the goal of amalgamating her two passions.
“My purpose in pursuing a PhD in Theatre is to combine my areas of expertise: to approach arts-based research as both an artist and as a scientist, to bridge these two worlds, and to study how cultural perceptions and narratives of aging can influence performance and performance forms”
The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. These are the most prestigious awards available to graduate students at UBC, and are awarded to the top doctoral candidates in the Affiliated Fellowships competition.
Congratulations to Julia on this wonderful achievement – we are proud of you!
