What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in occupational therapy?

I wanted to work with people in a career in healthcare with a progressive and holistic approach to health. OT offered a fresh and unique perspective on health that really made sense to me. I was also attracted by the feeling that every OT I had met absolutely loved their job!

What’s the single biggest lesson you learned, or memory you’ll take away from your time as a MOT student at UBC?

The most important lesson that I learned from my experience as a MOT student at UBC is that my colleagues are my most integral resource. I was privileged to share two years with 50 amazing people, who all bring different and important strengths to the table. We really learned how to work together and be better together. I’m learning every day that there is so much experience, knowledge and energy to be found in each one of my colleagues and coworkers.

What’s in store for you next?

I’ll be working at CBI OT Services – a private healthcare company. The particular centre I work at in Victoria, B.C., offers interdisciplinary rehab services, as well as community occupational therapy services. I am currently working in the OT services department. Our role as community OTs is quite diverse, but I am most often working with individuals after car accidents to help them return to everyday life activities. We provide OT assessment and treatment but also help to manage client’s overall rehabilitation and coordinate services with the whole rehab team.

What attracted you about working for this company?

CBI offers a great work environment, with many young therapists and a supportive management team. I was really interested in the flexibility and creativity that is afforded to therapists working with the company. I was also attracted to the fact that CBI is a large organization, with a lot of resources, experience and support for new therapists.

What excites you about the next stage of your OT journey?

I am most excited about developing my practice knowledge and beginning to feel like a real OT! There is a ton of room for creativity and growth in my position and I’m so excited about getting into practice and learning a ton each day.
